Last Summer
11 FebThis post from the great Richard Kirk makes me very happy. In the midst of his fascinating career, Rick made time to create two wonderful covers for Torpor Vigil releases—Songs of Elsewhere by Samuel Andreyev, and The Further Somniloquies of Dion McGregor. Thanks, Rick!

Richard A. Kirk | Visual Artist | Author
Last summer, my friend Steve Venright, and a car load of his wonderful family, came through for a visit. I’ve known Steve since we were teenagers (gasp). I just found this photo, which I had quite forgotten about, in my camera. It’s a good one don’t you think? Besides being an amazing poet, Steve is also the producer of Dreaming Like Mad with Dion McGregor. That beautiful art work is by Kerry Zentner. Check out Steve’s website at TVR.

Over by the Freak Zone
13 OctThe ever-adventurous Stuart Maconie has been playing Samuel Andreyev’s Tubular West again. His BBC6 Freak Zone program aired “Over by the Mantle” from the album Maconie said he was “really getting into.” I’m really into it too—and I never want out!

Vintage Andreyev!
21 Mar
As we approach the release of Dreaming Like Mad with Dion McGregor, all the attention’s been on the great somniloquist. So I thought I’d put some focus back on the other great TVR recording artist, Samuel Andreyev. Here are some (mostly remixed and all remastered) tracks from the 2004 compilation Regions Reach. (Above is the cover art of Samuel’s 2002 album Songs of Elsewhere, by the great Richard A. Kirk: http://www.richardakirk.com/)
Happy Birthday to The Tubular West!

“Noisy fog” and other wonders of The Tubular West
3 JanWelcome to the first TVR post of 2014 — a year in which we’ll mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first Dion McGregor album (The Dream World of …. from Decca) with the release of an enthralling new compilation called Dreaming Like Mad with Dion McGregor — Yet More Outrageous Recordings of the World’s Most Renowned Sleeptalker. Meanwhile, further news of The Tubular West, Samuel Andreyev’s album of “haunting beauty” (Apparently Magazine).
In December, Jean Daniel did an hour-long Tubular West feature on his Radio Judaïca program Jazzology (Strasbourg), calling it “Un magnifique album de pop contemporaine”! In his between-tracks commentary, M. Daniel invoked a wide range of musical entities in an effort to convey the distinctive qualities and diversity of the recording: Purcell, Schubert and Debussy through the Beatles, Bowie and Pink Floyd. One of the songs, he suggested, was like the soundtrack to an imaginary David Lynch film. Oh, and there was something about “noisy fog” (my translation) that I liked too.

Next up will be a live appearance by Samuel on the Radio France show RenDez-Vous (date to be announced soon).
There you have it, for the moment, but much more to come!

Tubular West on The Freak Zone
9 JunHere’s a quick first report on current Torpor Vigil action.
Stuart Maconie expressed his enthusiasm about The Tubular West (“really getting into it”) when he played a track on his BBC Radio 6 Freak Zone show last Sunday. Evidently in a test of its structural and sonic integrity, the engineer filtered out all the low frequencies. So listeners didn’t hear, for example, the terrific bass line played by Andrea Agostini–but the song still sounded great! Listen at 59:40 for Stuart’s introduction to “Plutos’s Matches” (or start at 52:55 if, like me, you’re a Gentle Giant fan):
